Yes, but the person must consent to therapy and be willing to engage themselves.

What is the difference between psychiatrists, psychologists, registered counsellors, unregistered or "listed" counsellors, and coaches or coaching?

It’s important to know who you're working with and who can or can't be regulated by a professional board, especially when your mental health is involved.

A psychiatrist is a specialist medical doctor who can prescribe medication and has studied for over 13 years.

A psychologist holds a 2 year Master’s degree and is trained in assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based therapeutic intervention and has been through at least one theoretical year and one internship year in their masters program.

A registered counsellor completes an Honours-level qualification and provides short-term supportive counselling, not long-term therapy or clinical treatment.

An unregistered or “listed” counsellor is not recognised by the HPCSA and may not be trained, regulated, or held to any formal ethical or professional standards. Some may only have a certificate or diploma.

Coaches are not regulated mental health professionals. While they can support goal-setting or motivation, they are not qualified to treat psychological distress or manage risk.
